Alexandria Stone is one of the many individuals who faces mental health challenges due to a health diagnosis. Diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of twenty, she is now celebrating one year without seizures and is actively taking steps to prioritize her mental health.
Initially, Alexandria felt isolated due to her diagnosis as she didn’t know anyone else with epilepsy. However, determined to make a difference, Alexandria took proactive steps to educate others on how to respond and assist if she were to have a seizure while in their presence. Alexandria believes that by educating others, she can help demystify epilepsy and reduce the stigma surrounding it.
In addition to her advocacy efforts, Alexandria found solace in connecting with support groups both online and offline. These communities provided her with a sense of belonging and reassurance; reminding her that she was not alone in her journey. Sharing experiences with others who understood her challenges gave her strength and courage
Through therapy, Alexandria learned valuable techniques to manage her anxiety, and she has begun to grow more confident in her ability to navigate life with epilepsy.
As she looks towards the future Alexandria remains committed to her mission of raising awareness and supporting others. She hopes to always continue to take steps to educate others on epilepsy.
Alexandria is now on track to get her degree in social work. As she works towards her degree, her goal is to advocate for those with epilepsy and help dismantle the stigma surrounding the condition. She shared, “I believe that with the right support and understanding, individuals with epilepsy can lead fulfilling lives, and I encourage everyone to join the conversation and support this cause.”
Despite her ambition toward advocating for her diagnosis and safety, Alexandria shared that she tries her best not to live in fear due to her seizures. She stated that she believes “it’s vital for everyone to know that epilepsy can develop at any stage in life, not just from birth”. This awareness and mindset can help reduce misunderstandings and foster a more supportive environment.
Alexandria also shared that she wishes others to understand that epilepsy is not just a physical condition but something that can impact mental well-being significantly. It’s crucial to recognize the emotional and psychological challenges that come with it.
Alexandria works with EFNENY to maintain her mental health, advocate for herself and others and to play an important role in our community.
What does Alexandria want others to know about epilepsy?
“I spent the longest time thinking epilepsy was a condition you had to be born with, I had zero idea it could be adult onset.”
