Epilepsy does not have to hold you back. Aiden Gonzalez is proving that and more!

Aiden was diagnosed with epilepsy when he was 7 years old, when he began having absence seizures. This is a type of seizure that causes someone to stare off and lose consciousness for a short period of time.

He has learned the importance of understanding his own needs. Aiden has loved playing sports for a large part of his life, but his seizures had the tendency to make participation harder for him. It was especially difficult when he was younger and trying to get his seizures under control with the right medications. But he is proud to have worked to overcome the challenges he has faced.

He stated that “sometimes taking a break from the field does not always mean being removed from the field.” Taking care of yourself does not equal giving up, and it can help us become better in the end.

Now a senior at Guilderland Central High School and 10 years since his diagnosis, Aiden has been seizure-free for over a year! Aiden has not let his diagnosis get in the way of doing the things he loves, including participating in sports. Aiden is a part of the Guilderland varsity soccer team and is a part-time soccer referee at Afrim’s Sports. In addition to sports, Aiden enjoys photography in his free time and shared that he one day hopes to own his own photography business.

Aiden has dedicated his time to supporting others with epilepsy in multiple ways. He knows how crucial it is to show his community what epilepsy is and how it can affect people. He has made an effort to advocate in his school through projects and assignments. Aiden has been a member of EFNENY’s Kids Crew and Big Buddies programs, both of which help to show kids with epilepsy that they’re not alone.

On top of his advocacy and volunteer efforts, he has enjoyed participating in EFNENY’s Walk to End Epilepsy, where he has been able to make a difference through creating awareness and raising funds that support the Foundation.

Aiden was recently recognized for his outstanding academic achievements and service to his school and community by being awarded the Bonnie Scholarship from St. Bonaventure University!

Though Aiden does what is necessary to manage his epilepsy, he doesn’t let it stop him from doing amazing things. Beyond this, he’s using his kindness and dedication to uplift others going through similar journeys. Teens like Aiden show us how we can support ourselves and our community while staying true to our passions.

What do you think everyone should know about epilepsy?

“It’s a serious disorder and everyone should be educated on how to handle a situation involving a seizure. People do not tend to know how common Epilepsy is.”
