Intern Spotlight: Meet Emily!

Emily Huff joined the Epilepsy Foundation of Northeastern New York (EFNENY) team in Fall 2024 as a Master of Social Work (MSW) Intern.

Emily is currently in her third year at the University at Albany where she is working toward her Master of Social Work (MSW) and Master of Public Health (MPH). She is set to graduate this May!

Emily chose to intern with the Epilepsy Foundation of Northeastern New York (EFNENY) because of her strong interest in combining social work and public health to make a meaningful impact. From the moment she began interning with the EFNENY team, she was inspired by the organization’s dedication to improving the lives of individuals living with epilepsy. Her background gave her the valuable skill set needed to contribute to initiatives that address both the physical and mental health challenges that come with an epilepsy diagnosis. Emily was intrigued by EFNENY’s holistic approach to support, which includes education, advocacy, and community outreach. When Emily saw this internship opportunity, she was interested in being a part of an organization where she could directly engage with individuals and families, promote health equity, and help reduce the stigma surrounding epilepsy.

“It’s incredibly rewarding to see how the work we do can make a tangible difference in people’s lives, from raising awareness to offering emotional support,” Emily shared when asked about what her favorite part of her internship has been.

Additionally, Emily shared how she has enjoyed being given the opportunity to directly connect with individuals and families affected by epilepsy. During her time at EFNENY she has been able to provide individuals with valuable support, whether it be through educational resources, one-on-one therapeutic sessions, or community outreach.

Emily hopes to continue working directly with communities in a nonprofit setting, where she can make a real, hands-on impact. She shared that she is passionate about using both her public health and social work background to address immediate needs and create sustainable change in the lives of individuals.

“I want to work at the grassroots level, collaborating with communities to develop programs that directly address health and social challenges. My focus is on creating accessible, practical solutions that empower individuals and improve their quality of life.” Emily stated.

Alongside her passion for providing support for others, Emily enjoys spending her free time catching up on reality tv shows. She shared that watching all types of tv shows ranging from competition shows to relationship dramas is truly her guilty pleasure.

The EFNENY team is so excited to have Emily as a part of the organization. Her willingness to help is never-ending and her dedication to our mission is greatly appreciated. We are excited to see the impact Emily leaves on the world and looking forward to celebrating her successes as she crosses the stage this May! Thank you for all that you do, Emily!
