Kayla Beaudoin is a shining example of what it means to rise above adversity. She is a talented student-athlete, a role model, a changemaker, and a young woman who proves that with courage and compassion, an epilepsy diagnosis can become a powerful mission—one that inspires others to believe in the strength of perseverance and the possibility of change.
Diagnosed with epilepsy at just one year old, Kayla has defied the odds and remained seizure-free for the past 12 years. Now 17, she is beginning her freshman year at SUNY Oneonta, where she will pursue a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree and play on the women’s basketball team.
In addition to managing her epilepsy through a strict daily regimen of medications, Kayla has faced a number of physical setbacks, including injuries sustained during high school sports. Yet, much like any determined student juggling academics and extracurriculars, she has shown remarkable perseverance—continuing to excel athletically despite these challenges. Her dedication was recently recognized when she was named one of the ten Capital District Sports Women of the Year, an honor awarded for academic excellence, athletic achievement, and community service. Her dream is to become an All-American basketball player, and she is already proving she has the heart and drive to make it happen.
Beyond the court and classroom, Kayla is a powerful voice for epilepsy awareness. She has been a dedicated advocate for many years, participating in the national Teens Speak Up event in Washington, D.C., where she met with legislators to push for change. Her advocacy is woven into every part of her life—from leading Purple Day initiatives at her high school to organizing an epilepsy awareness basketball game and fundraising events like lemonade stands. Additionally, she has been dedicating her time to volunteering as a Big Buddy with Kids Crew.
Kayla’s impact is tangible. She has raised over $75,000 through her tireless efforts, her biggest effort being with her annual walk team, “Kayla’s Cure Crew,” serving as a beacon of hope and community.
In recognition of her academic achievements, leadership, and advocacy, Kayla was awarded the Epilepsy Foundation of Northeastern New York Scholarship.
Kayla Beaudoin’s journey is a testament to resilience, purpose, and the power of turning personal challenges into a force for good. As she begins this new chapter, Kayla’s story reminds us all that strength lies not just in overcoming adversity, but in using it to uplift others.
What does Kayla think everyone should know about epilepsy?
“Epilepsy shouldn’t be a limitation. Be true to yourself and continue to reach for the stars.”
